"The bitterest pill of all is not being able to talk about yourgifted child or compare notes with those of other parents "

This extract from a letter by Mrs Jones was quoted in The Times on the 25th August 1966. In the same year Margaret Branch, a Psychiatric Social Worker, established the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC).

Decades ago Margaret Branch recognised that there were children who have educational needs that are different from the norm. She also recognised that the families of these children needed support, information and advice to enable them to help their gifted children in the most appropriate ways.

The situation has improved a great deal since 1966, but it is still very difficult for parents to discuss their gifted children with other parents. There are still gifted children who are misunderstood by those working in education and health and there are still families who feel as if they are the only ones dealing with some of the issues that can come along with the blessing of having a gifted child.

NAGC works towards changing this.

Through the continued growth and support of our membership NAGC is increasingly able to support families with what can sometimes seem like impossibly difficult situations. Our local branches allow families to meet up with other families in similar situations and we give practical support and advice to help parents, gifted children and education and health professionals. We are working at all levels to make real and practical changes to both perceptions of giftedness and to the way gifted children are provided for in the education system.
